Joining Teresa in the studio today are Mike Burke, President and CEO of Make-a-Wish Connecticut, and one of last year's wish recipients, Katrina Ljunggren. They were here to tell us about their upcoming event, "Sunflowers for Wishes".
"Sunflowers for Wishes" is an 8-day event at Buttonwood Farms in Griswold CT. Over 400,000 sunflowers will be in full bloom; hayrides through the sunflower fields and bouquets of sunflowers will be available for purchase ($5 each) and 100% of proceeds benefit Make-A-Wish Connecticut, whose mission is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.
People of all ages should come out for some homemade ice cream right on the farm and take a ride on the hayride, purchase some flowers, and help make wishes come true.
The event takes place from July 20th - July 28th, beginning at 10AM daily and lasting until dusk.
Last year, the event raised $110,000.
2013 marks the 10th anniversary of "Sunflowers for Wishes" which has raised $700,000 since its beginnings - with the average cost of a wish being $8,500, that's over 80 wishes that have come true thanks to the Button family and "Sunflowers for Wishes."
Katrina's wish was to go to Walt Disney World. She had the time of her life.
Volunteers are still welcome and needed so if any local businesses or organizations are interested in helping out they are in need of daily cutters 6AM-1030AM to cut flowers and bouquet them for the day's sales. Contact Make-A-Wish for more information.
