New Haven, Conn. (WTNH) - There's an effort underway by churches and synagogues in the New Haven area to make sure no one is left out in the cold.
They are opening their doors to the homeless for a program called Abraham's Tent .
Beulah Heights First Pentecostal Church is one of those churches. They will house about twelve men for one week at a time until they move on to a different place.
The program is needed because the city's shelters are not big enough to help everyone.
Allison Cunningham is the executive director of the Columbus House .
“We opened up the overflow shelter just a couple of weeks ago. That shelter runs way beyond capacity to the extent we had to turn people away,” stated Cunningham. “We didn't want to do that last year and so the congregations all said, ‘Yeah, we'll do this.’”
“We have reached out, tremendously, seeing the need,” said Bishop Theodore Brooks of Beulah Heights First Pentecostal Church. “Wish I could do more, but we are limited by what we can do.”
Abraham's Tent is in its second year and runs through March. It's modeled after a number of different programs across the country. They also bring in an employment specialist to help people find jobs.
