Breast cancer patients need a surgeon

Published : Wednesday, 10 Oct 2012, 12:30 PM EDT

(WTNH) -- Breast reconstruction is an option for some breast cancer patients who have undergone treatment, but it is important to set up a plan before going forward.

For women who have lost one or both breasts to cancer, breast reconstruction is an integral part of treatment, but Dr. Beth Collins says it's important to set up a plan first.

Dr. Collins is a double board certified plastic surgeon in general surgery and in plastic and reconstructive surgery and has been awarded for her breast reconstruction work.

She also says that every person diagnosed with breast cancer needs to see a plastic surgeon, so it's critical to consult with one before or at the beginning stages of treatment.

An American Society of Plastic Surgeons August survey revealed that 89% of women would prefer to see breast reconstruction results before undergoing the procedure themselves.

Dr. Collins will be hosting a G.I.T. your "PINK On" day October 18th at her office in Guilford. A portion of the proceeds from the day will go to benefit The Get in Touch Foundation, which is a non-profit organization based in Connecticut that educates young girls from 5th grade to 12th on breast health and awareness. The program is free to schools and is taught through the school's health education classes.
