(WTNH) -- Author Jean Kwok talks about her New York Times bestseller "Girl In Translation."

Like the heroine in the book, Kwok moved from Hong Kong to New York City as a child. Her family was placed in an unheated, rat and roach infested apartment. Kwok worked in a sweatshop in Chinatown starting when she was just 5 years old.

Years later, she graduated from Harvard with honors and later became a bestselling author.

She now lives in Holland with her husband and two sons.

"Girl In Translation" has been published in 17 countries and has won many awards and honors.
