(WTNH) - Nutritionist Jim McNerney from Live It Wellness joined Connecticut Style with some ways you can make peace with your food.

-- Jim says when people have an unhealthy relationship with food, it’s almost never about the food. The Primary Foods are: Relationships, Career, Spirituality, and Physical Activity. When we’re in a good and satisfying place with respect to our Primary Foods, our need to use food to self-medicate or fill an empty void usually disappears.

-- You should stop dieting because dieting is literally a battle against nature and creates an adversarial relationship with food. Stress can directly lead to weight gain. You should never eat when you are stressed.

-- Slow down when you eat. Make each mealtime peaceful, serene and an event unto itself.

-- There are no “good” foods and “bad” foods. The dose makes the poison. Don’t deprive yourself of the foods you enjoy. Those very foods are your friends, not your enemies.
