Historians of witchcraft in America always point to the Salem witch trials and executions as the designation of where and what took place during this tumultuous time in New England, but the little known fact is, the first ‘Witchcraft Panic’ took place right here in Connecticut starting in 1647, a full 46 years prior to the culmination we’re all so familiar with. In fact, the last women to be hanged for witchcraft in Connecticut took place on January 25, 1663. She was Mary Barnes of Farmington.
After portraying Mary Barnes for the Stanley-Whitman House for several years, Virginia Wolf was inspired to write ‘Panic in Connecticut; Accused Witches Have Their Say’. She was so intrigued by Mary’s story, that Virginia felt compelled to bring hers and others stories to life.
In light of this year being the 350 th anniversary of the last witchcraft hanging in Connecticut, The Herstory Theater, along with the Stanley-Whitman House, have conjured up “The Farmington Witch Project; An Evening of Enlightenment”, taking place on Friday, January 25 th at First Church in Farmington.
