Local man's link to the Titanic

Published : Thursday, 12 Apr 2012, 1:45 PM EDT

Al Ermer's great Grandfather James Kelly died on Titanic.

James Kelly’s daughter Margaret came to New Haven two years before her father. She worked at Strouse Adler to raise money to send back to Ireland. This money was used by her father to purchase tickets on the Titanic. Unfortunately, James never made it to the USA. His body was discovered by the MacKay Bennett and buried at sea.

James’ wife and children became known in New Haven as the Titanic Kellys. In honor of their strength, the family will have a Titanic Kelly family reunion scheduled for the 100th anniversary of the ship's sinking on April 14 in West Haven.
