(WTNH) -- Citizens Bank and News 8 announce the latest champion in action, Neighborhood House Services of New Haven.
Twice a year Citizens Bank and News 8 team up to honor a deserving non-profit as part of the Champions in Action program. The program is celebrating it's 10th anniversary this year.
"I can't think of a better way to celebrate than to announce our second Champion for the year 2012 in the area of neighborhood revitalization and that of course is Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven," said Citizens Bank President, Ned Handy.
The recipient gets a $35,000 check, with no strings attached.
"They've helped so many people with houses, all first time homebuyers, revitalize so many neighborhoods, helped residents take charge of those neighborhoods so as a catalyst for turning neighborhoods around we thought they were a perfect recipient," Handy said.
The mission of NHS is to provide the opportunity for affordable homeownership for people who otherwise would not realize their dream of buying a home.
NHS also offers financial support to people not able to keep up with mortgage payments in this tight economy.
In 33 years the Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven has renovated and sold nearly 300 homes. Hundreds of families have learned how to make repairs and routine maintenance through its Home Ownership Center.
