(WTNH) -- Griffin Hospital's Health Initiative for Men (HiM) , was launched in 2011 to help inspire men to have an annual physical and raise awareness about men's health issues, such as prostate cancer and colorectal cancer.
Let’s face it, men don’t always take care of themselves as well as they should. That includes seeing their doctor for an annual checkup, when many health problems can be identified through screening and treated before they become more serious or even life-threatening. Colon cancer, which is nearly 100% preventable through screening colonoscopy at the appropriate age, is one example of a preventive screening that can save lives and prevent unnecessary hardship and suffering.
Colorectal cancer is a silent killer, very often with no symptoms. Merely being 50 years or older puts every man and woman at average risk for developing colon cancer. It is recommended those at average risk, start having regular screening at age 50. Those at greater risk, with a family history of colon cancer, may need to begin regular screening at an earlier age.
