Waterbury, Conn. (WTNH) - A proposed tuition hike sparks action among UConn students who are now planning a protest for Monday.

It is in response to a plan to raise tuition costs more than 6 percent for the 2010/2011 school year. In dollars and cents that's a $1,200 increase for in-state students and $2,200 for out-of-state students.

UConn administrators say the hike will save jobs and even create new positions. Still, the news isn't sitting well with students News Channel 8 spoke with on the Waterbury campus.

"As a student, that's as a commuter, my tuition doubled from '06 til now," said UConn senior Danielle Davenport.

"If they move the rate up, I don't know if I'll be able to pay for it cause the books are expensive and like, right now, I still owe like a balance," said UConn freshman Rhodnisha Green.

"If they raise the tuition fee then I don't know if I can make it for the next semester," said UConn junior Peter Jung.

Trustees will consider the proposed increase next week.
