Stonington (WTNH) - A tractor trailer driving on I-95 North rolled down an embankment, crashed onto another road and caught fire Saturday morning, killing the driver.
All lanes of I-95 were closed in Stonington northbound at Exit 90 until Department of Transportation crews deem the highway safe to travel on. Police had also shut down the southbound side at Exit 91, but is has since been re-opened.
The crash happened at approximately 8 a.m. when the tractor trailer went off a bridge overpass, down an embankment, and ended up on Taugwonk Road.
D.O.T. crews are inspecting the damage done to the highway after the truck's fuel tank ruptured, causing diesel fuel to spill on the highway and catch fire.
Lt. J. Paul Vance of the Connecticut State Police Department told News Channel 8 the highway will be shut down for several hours while the cleanup and investigation are conducted, and until then it will be a "traffic nightmare" for people travelling on both the highway and nearby local roads.
The driver has not been publicly identified. The origination and destination of the truck was not immediately available.
