Company scraps Conn portion of transmission line

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - A Toronto company that proposed an underwater electric transmission cable from Canada is scrapping plans for the Connecticut portion.

Transmission Developers Inc. announced Thursday it is abandoning the part of the route from New York City to Bridgeport Harbor.

The line was to have extended from Quebec to Connecticut under Lake Champlain, the Hudson River and Long Island Sound.

Donald Jessome, president and chief executive, says power generators find it more lucrative to sell electricity in the New York City marketplace than in Connecticut.

Scrapping the Connecticut portion of the project will reduce the cost of the project from $3.8 billion to $1.9 billion, the length from 420 miles to 355 and the amount of electricity transported from 2,000 megawatts to 1,000.
