DANBURY, Conn. (AP) - Danbury and New Milford hospitals plan to merge.

In an agreement being signed Thursday morning, the two hospitals agree to operate separately but share the same management team.

The hospitals each will retain their names, staffs and independent operating licenses, but would be governed by a common 18-member board of directors and chief executive.

The hospitals would each also maintain separate boards to oversee fundraising activities.

The state Health Department is expected to hold a hearing on the merger and must approve the plan along with the attorney general's office and the U.S. Department of Justice.
