Union reviewing latest Stop & Shop deal

(AP) - The threat of an immediate strike at Stop & Shop has evaporated as the union representing nearly 40,000 workers prepares to review a final contract proposal.

Brian Petronella, president of Connecticut's Local 317 of the United Food and Commercial Workers, said negotiators will examine the company's offer Friday. The five locals in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island have scheduled meetings Sunday for members to vote on the proposal.

The locals had said it would end the current contract by Friday, paving the way for a strike. A strike could still be called, but not until after workers reject the contract proposal in Sunday voting.

Petronella did not offer details, but the two sides have stalled over differences over wages.

A spokeswoman for Stop & Shop did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
