Hydrogen station opens in Wallingford

Wallingford, Conn. (WTNH) - Talk about going green! A new hydrogen fueling station just opened in Wallingford and they're even producing the hydrogen by using water and the sun.

SunHydro's first filling station on the East coast is located on Technology Drive.

"You can drive a car by sun and water and no emissions. You can't get much better than that," said SunHydro founder, Tim Sullivan.

The fueling station is outside the Wallingford offices of Proton Energy Systems -- that's who came up with the Hydrolyzer, the device that makes hydrogen from water using sunlight.

This is just a small step as the nation moves toward energy independence.

"Way too much oil comes from places around the world that are not exactly friendly to our way of life and what we do," said Gus Sperling, US Department of Energy.

That's why the Department of Energy is backing the idea of a "Hydrogen Highway" so anyone who does get a hydrogen-powered car can fill it up from Maine to Miami.

"You know, once people see it and see that it's a real thing and not dangerous and just like a regular car, hopefully it will become the future," Sullivan said.

The next two station are scheduled to open in Boston and New York in the next year.
