Conn.'s week-long sales tax holiday to begin

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut shoppers are expected to save as much as $7.5 million in sales taxes during the annual week-long tax holiday.

The sales tax-free week began Sunday and will run through Aug. 25.

Throughout the week, clothing and footwear that cost less than $300 will be exempt from the state's 6.35 percent tax. The holiday does not apply to sports equipment, specialty clothing jewelry or accessories.

Also, it does not affect catalog, online or layaway purchases.

State revenue Commissioner Kevin Sullivan said the tax holiday will help consumers stretch their household budgets as they make back-to-school purchases.

He said it will also be a boon for retailers. Many are promoting the sales tax-free week to attract shoppers.
