Danbury boy eliminated in 2012 National Spelling Bee

(WTNH) -- A Danbury eighth grader has been knocked out of the semi finals of the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee semi-finals.

Broadview Middle School student Rahul Malayappan was the only one of the four Connecticut contestants to advance into today's rounds.

In Round 4, Malayappan spelled "cicatrize" correctly, but in the fifth round he missed the double 'n' in the word " quinquennalia "

This was his fifth year in the National Spelling Bee. He finished in 33rd place in 2010.

Three other students from Connecticut took part in the competition: Abraham Pierson Elementary School 5th grader Kitty Shortt , Oakdale Elementary School 5th grader Lily Wang , and Timothy Edwards Middle School 6th grader Sairah Sheikh .

The finals will be held tonight and will air live on ESPN beginning at 8:00 p.m..
