HADDAM, Conn. (AP) — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has acquired 38 acres owned by the operator of the former Connecticut Yankee Nuclear Power plant and make it part of a wildlife refuge.

The New Haven Register reports that the federal agency said Tuesday it purchased the land for $900,000. It will become part of the Salmon River Division of the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge.

The refuge, named after the late Rep. Silvio Conte of western Massachusetts, was established in 1991 to conserve native plants, animals and their habitats in the 7.2 million-acre Connecticut River watershed.

Connecticut Yankee operated from 1968 until 1998 and was decommissioned in 2007.
