With new pope, Hartford's archbishop may retire

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Hartford's archbishop says he may retire now that a new pope is in office.

Archbishop Henry Mansell told WFSB-TV's "Face the State" on Sunday that he notified the previous pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI, last October that he was willing to retire. He turned 75 on Oct. 10.

The Vatican told Mansell to remain as archbishop for now. He says he was told that his tenure would be reviewed when a new pope is chosen.

Pope Francis was elected on Wednesday.

Asked if he could find out at any day that it's time to retire, Mansell said, "could be."

Mansell, who has been Hartford's archbishop since December 2003, said he's been very happy in the job. He says even after a successor is appointed he'll remain in the archdiocese to help.
