CL&P union rejects offer, talks to continue

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Union workers at Connecticut's largest utility have rejected a contract offer, but both sides say they'll continue working toward a deal.

The proposal from Connecticut Light & Power was rejected by negotiators for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers last month. It was overwhelmingly turned down in a membership vote that ended Friday evening. The union has said issues include staffing and overtime.

John Fernandes, Local 457 business manager, said Friday night union leaders are in touch with a federal mediator.

CL&P spokesman Mitch Gross said in a statement the company is disappointed union members turned down the offer that included a 10 percent wage increase over four years. He said the company will keep working with the union toward reaching an agreement.

The previous contract covering about 1,200 IBEW members expired in June.
