Gas prices keep creeping higher

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Gasoline prices in Connecticut and across the country continue their upward climb.

Drivers are disgusted and dumbfounded by the sudden spike.

"I mean you have to get gas so you can't do anything about it," said Erica, "just cut back on other expenses."

Prices at pump have been steadily climbing for the last week. Aaron Kuoec of AAA in West Hartford breaks it down.

"We are paying them more for gas than we have ever paid on any Feburary 18th in history," said Kuoec. "The average today in Connecitcut is $3.96 a gallon. That's up about 29 cents in the last month."

Experts are putting the blame on the rising price of oil. The Spike is unusual for February when demand is low. Traditionally gas prices rise 40-cents a gallon in late March through early May.

"So if we are at just about $4 in bitter cold of February what might it be by summer driving season," asked News 8's Erin Cox.

"That is the million dollar question," said Kuoec, "probably higher."

Some parts of Connecticut are already over the four dollar a gallon mark. At one location in New Canaan gas was priced at $4.19 a gallon.

According to AAA, Monday's national average for a gallon of gas is $3.73 a gallon. In Hawaii, that gallon of gas costs $4.284, while in Wyoming the average is $3.176
