Beating the heat at the beach

New Haven, Conn. (WTNH) - On Sunday five state parks and part of Hammonassett beach were closed off to cars.

It's a wait many say is worth it. Alex Fadundo is happy to search for a parking spot today. When he came last July fourth the state park was closed because these lots were at capacity.

Fadundo, a Meriden resident, said, "We just waited a little bit end up parking across the street and then walk. That's okay it's a long walk. Yes it is a long walk."

Gas prices aren't stopping some from making the trip to the shore.

Jolie Acevedo, a New Britain resident, said, "I have four boys so anything to get them out of the house and have a good time."

And all this means big business for beaches like Rocky Neck.

Each car pays at least 9 dollars to park and there are more than two thousand spots available. The nearby Frosty Treat also benefits from those who are beach bound.

Bill Zeilman of Frosty Treat said, "My beach is totally weather so now that it's hot and sunny we're cooking."

Speaking of cooking, the heat is on at Bobby's Place and Sarah Clark has to be creative in cooling off in this little kitchen.

Sarah Clark of Bobby's Place said, "We've got the fan going. Every once in a while I'll spray myself down with the hose."

The East Lyme Public Library has even seen a boom in business these days.

Cathy Shield of East Lyme Public Library said, "We get a lot of people come in and say it's nice in here and don't go outside. And you can't get rid of them. No, no they're here til we close."
