(WTNH) – When it comes to baseball loyalty, Connecticut is pretty much right down the middle with about half Yankee fans and the other half pulling for the Red Sox.

However, the boys from Beantown are making a play on the roads to get a little more support in the Nutmeg State.

The Red Sox hit a home run, even with avid Yankee fans like Governor Malloy, in announcing that vanity license plates featuring the ‘Sox’ logo will soon be available for Connecticut drivers.

“On behalf of ownership, we would like to really welcome you to the family today and sign you up,” said Sam Kennedy, Red Sox C.O.O.

The money raised from the charity plates, which will cost $115, will go towards scholarships for Connecticut students.

“The idea of having a scholarship fund and helping kids face the expense of college education is a great opportunity,” said Governor Malloy. “I couldn’t be prouder to be here. I couldn’t be prouder to wear this shirt this day.”

You could have fielded your own team with the collection of politicians on hand for Friday’s announcement, some Yankees fans, other like Senator Chris Murphy are life-long Sox lovers.

“I’ve always said that I’m willing to pander to lots of different political groups, not just the Yankees.”

The Red Sox say through their foundation they have generated more than $50 million for New England charities in the past decade, and the Connecticut vanity plates are just another way of giving back.

“The Red Sox organization, in addition to having some fundamental commitments to winning and preserving Fenway Park, but we have a more important commitment to giving back to the community,” said Kennedy.

The state DMV says it needs at least 400 applications for the plates before production can begin.
