NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Strong winds caused problems for many alone the shoreline Tuesday night.

The wind was whipping off the Sound leaving Lighthouse Point Park nearly empty, except for a few intrepid souls.

How are the conditions out here," asked News 8's Annie Rourke.

"They're absolutely marvelous, you know, you never get tired of this," said Maria Piscitelli Carpentino, of New Haven. "It's new every time, every storm and we're so blessed to have it."

Whether it's a blessing or not is up for debate. The wind was to blame for problems in East Haven, on Ellis Street, the tide brought in flood waters and the wind left it nowhere to go.

"The wind coming out of the south now is pushing it in, it's not letting it go back out into the Sound and it's pushing the water back towards our properties over here," said Dave Levenduski, of East Haven.

Strong gusts brought trees and wires down in Milford as well. All along Meadowside Road, homes were in the dark. Kate Feeley was able to catch up on some reading.

"I have a Kindle so it's lit up, thank goodness," Feeley said.

Candlelight will have to suffice for the rest. The crews were hard at work cleaning up the tree, but there was concern about putting someone up in the bucket to fix the wires; the wind was still too strong. Folks here are being told, it may be a day before the power is back. They aren't exactly overjoyed about it, but say that they've lived through far worse.

"It's not that bad," Feeley said. "I mean, it could be a lot worse cause we didn't have power for five days when the hurricane hit."
