HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The president of the Connecticut State Police Union says the impasse declared by the administration in talks for a new contract is just one step in the process.
CSPU President Andrew Matthews said Wednesday everyone is hopeful for an agreement in talks that began at the start of the year.
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's labor director said Tuesday night fundamental differences remain between the two sides and talks are headed for arbitration.
Matthews declined to comment on negotiation details.
The union represents about 1,016 troopers. Its last contract expired on July 1.
The union and the Malloy administration have clashed over staffing. The union opposes cutbacks and consolidations it says compromise public safety. Malloy has said the changes are needed to lower costs and put more troopers on patrol.
