Avoid tax scams

(WTNH) - Knowing when the IRS is not the IRS will help you steer clear of tax scams.

If your receive an email from the IRS saying your return is being audited or asking for personal information before you can receive a refund, you're almost certainly being scammed.

According to the IRS, scammers have become so bold in recent years some have even called or come to peoples homes phishing for information.

The recent economic turmoil is also being exploited by scammers who have claimed that tax filers are eligbile for stimulus rebates provided they give certain sensitive information.

IRS says it not only will never send you an unexpected email, they never ask for personal information in their emails.

Rule number one -- never give your personal information to anyone you don't know.

If you're concerned that you are being scammed, report it on IRS.gov
