HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - New census figures show that median income in Connecticut fell 6.1 percent last year compared with 2009, a decline that was second only to Nevada's drop-off.
The American Community Survey estimates released Thursday show that the state's median income was $64,032 in 2010, down from $68,174 in 2009. The national median income decreased 2.2 percent to about $50,000.
Despite the decline in Connecticut, the state's median income was higher than those in 47 other states. Maryland, New Jersey and Alaska had slightly higher incomes.
Experts tie the national income decline to the struggling economy.
The data also showed that 10.1 percent of Connecticut residents earned below the federal poverty level in 2010, compared with 9.4 percent in 2009.
