(WTNH) - Just in time for the holiday season is a warning about toys that could put your child at risk.

Despite several new toy safety laws passed in the United States, watchdog groups say dangerous toys are still for sale on local store shelves.

The Connecticut Public Interest Research Group -- or ConnPIRG -- teamed up the with the State Attorney Generals office today, to get the word out that there are several things to look out for as we head into the holiday shopping season.

They say a loophole in one of the Consumer Protection Laws, recently passed, allows manufacturers to continue to sell items that pose a danger until their inventory runs out.

In other words, they don't have to pull the products from the shelves.
Among the things to look out for are plastics that contain phthalates, and toys with paint.

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal says especially be on the lookout for toys imported from China.

"Buy American. You can be sure of the labels. Toys imported from China are deceptive and misleading."

Blumenthal says his office is fighting that loophole allowing potentially dangerous toys to stay on the shelves until they are sold out.

Meantime, if you would like to see the Public Interest Research Group's list of dangerous toys -- as well as tips -- you can find it at Toy Safety.
