EASTON, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut couple has been charged with bilking a utility out of nearly $43,000 over seven years by damaging the meters that measure their home electricity use.
Maria and Marc Pennino of Easton were arrested last week on felony larceny, theft and conspiracy charges.
The Connecticut Post reports that officials with The United Illuminating Co. told police that they believe the couple damaged the meters shortly after their buying their home in December 2005. UI officials say the meters were pinned so they wouldn't register the true amount of electricity use, costing the company $42,579.
The Penninos posted $25,000 bonds and are to be arraigned in Bridgeport Superior Court on Feb. 6. They couldn't be reached for comment, and it's not clear if they have lawyers.
