Milford (WTNH) - News Channel 8 has obtained video from a dashboard camera inside a Milford police cruiser. It shows the fatal crash that killed two teens from Orange.
The crash happened back in June on the Boston Post Road in Orange just after 2:00 a.m.
Officer Jason Anderson had just left a call in West Haven when he smashed into a Mazda that was making a left hand turn. The crash killed David Servin and Ashlie Krakowski, both 19-years old.
Officer Anderson has been charged with two counts of manslaughter and reckless driving.
"It's a snapshot. It shows a point in time," said attorney Hugh Keefe, who represents Anderson. "It shows what happened during a period of time, but what is more important is putting it in context, what happened before, what happened after."
Keefe said this was a terrible accident but nothing more. He maintains there was no deliberate criminal conduct on the part of Anderson because he had a yellow blinking light. It's not clear what signal the teens had.
Officer Anderson had been at the bar Utopia 77 in West Haven less than a half-mile from the crash site. He got up to 94 mph in less than one minute and had no lights or sirens working and was not responding to a call.
The video released Tuesday was from the camera mounted in another police cruiser which captured the crash. It shows Officer Anderson speeding by without his lights on prior to the crash.
"I'm beside myself. It seems they were racing down the street, apparently they had no place to be in a hurry. I just don't understand why they do something like that," said Greg Daskalon, of Orange, after viewing the video. "It's a shame these children lost their lives. It's a heartache to these parents. This is something I would never want to live through. It hits home because I have a daughter that same age. That was very, very difficult to see."
News Channel 8 spoke to the father of the David Servin. He said he can't believe a law enforcement officer would have such disregard for the law.
