Doctor murder case judge seeks high court guidance

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut judge overseeing the case of a doctor charged with murdering a Yale University physician is asking the state Supreme Court for guidance on who should pay for the defense's expert witnesses.

Forty-seven-year-old Lishan Wang is accused of fatally shooting fellow doctor Vajinder Toor outside Toor's Branford home in April 2010. Police said the shooting stemmed from a dispute the two men had while working together at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in New York City.

Wang can't afford a lawyer and qualifies for a public defender, but insists on representing himself at trial.

The New Haven Register reports that New Haven Superior Court Judge Patrick Clifford decided Tuesday to seek guidance from the state's highest court on who will pay for the expert witnesses needed by the defense.
