MILFORD, Conn. (AP) — A former Shelton official has pleaded not guilty to allegations she stole more than $900,000 in city funds over several years.

Forty-eight-year-old Sharon Scanlon of Shelton pleaded not guilty Tuesday to one count of first-degree larceny and 56 counts of first-degree forgery.

The Connecticut Post reports Scanlon is accused of making fraudulent deposits ranging from $7,000 to $12,000 into two personal bank accounts from 2001 to last year while she was the city's assistant finance director. She resigned from the job she held for 17 years shortly before a criminal investigation began.

Scanlon declined to comment Tuesday. She posted $100,000 bail after her arrest in January.

Authorities say it's not clear what happened to the stolen money. They say Scanlon didn't buy expensive items or dress lavishly.
