HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- A man was fatally shot in Hamden Saturday evening and the incident is being investigated as a homicide, police say.

Police responded to the area of 19 North Street shortly after 7:30 p.m. Saturday after receiving numerous 911 phone calls reporting shots being fired.

At the scene, police located James T. Dudley, 22, suffering from gunshot wounds on the ground.

He was rushed to St. Raphael's Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after 8 p.m.

Police say that Dudley was shot several times and the incident is being investigated as a homicide.

Hamden Police Department Major Crime Dectectives assumed the investigation and are following up on several leads.

The shooting appears to have possibly started as an altercation on North Street between Dudley and unknown subject(s) near Dudley's motor vehicle.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Donald Remillard at (203) 230-4052 or Lt. Timothy Wydra at (203) 230-4044. All calls will remain confidential.
