A federal agent has testified that he didn't believe there was a threat to him or a Hartford detective when the detective shot a man to death in 2005.
Daniel Prather, a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, took the witness stand Wednesday in the manslaughter trial of now-retired Detective Robert Lawlor in Hartford Superior Court.
Prather and Lawlor were working together on an anti-gun task force in Hartford on May 7, 2005, when Lawlor opened on a car they had approached as it sped away. Eighteen-year-old Jashon Bryant died and another man was injured.
Lawlor says Bryant had a gun, but no weapon was found.
But Prather acknowledged under cross-examination that he was paying attention to the other man, and not Bryant.
