DERBY, Conn. (AP) - A Bridgeport man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, suspended after three years served, for killing a police officer with his pickup truck in 2010.

The New Haven Register reports Bruce Knapik Sr. was sentenced Thursday on manslaughter charges in the death of Shelton police Sgt. Orville Smith as he directed traffic. The 65-year-old Knapik, who police say was driving drunk, pleaded no contest in October.

He said in court he takes full responsibility.

Police say Knapik's blood alcohol level was 0.164, double the legal limit. Knapik told police he had two glasses of wine.

He will not operate a motor vehicle without a sufficient interlock device, submit to DNA testing and perform community service with Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
