New London, Conn. (WTNH) - Six young suspects, arrested in a murder investigation in New London, were all hauled into court Wednesday. They are accused in the death of a man, who was walking home from his job.
Police say 25-year-old Matthew Chew had just left his job at Two Wives Brick Oven Pizza back on October 29th and was on his way home to Huntington Street when he was attacked while walking. Stabbed six times he tried to make his way back to the restaurant but he collapsed in the road.
A month after the attack on Chew, six teens were arrested in connection with his murder. Marquis Singleton and Idris Elahi – both 17-years-old -- are believed to be the ones who were armed with knives. They are charged with murder while the four other teens are charged with accessory to murder.
”The mood's been really somber around here,” said Kenny Mitchell, co-worker and friend.
The arrests, though, won't bring back Kenny Mitchell's co-worker and friend. Matthew Chew worked as a pizza cook at the Two Wives restaurant where his picture remains on display and his pear and gorgonzola pizza still tops the specials menu.
He was a musician, an artist, and a friend.
“It's sad that it did happen but, of course, being that they hopefully caught the people who did this, you know, everybody can rest at ease,” Mitchell continued.
Police conducted hundreds of hours of interviews and surveillance, which lead to the six arrests. As for motive, the ten-page warrant is sealed but the judge said witness statements indicate there was "no reason” and “because we were bored."
No matter what happens in court, Matthew Chew will be remembered by friends and co-worker at this New London restaurant.
