NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — A judge is set to sentence a Connecticut man to up to 14 years in prison for killing a Navy seaman in a 2009 bar fight.
Thirty-eight-year-old Eduardo Rosario is scheduled to be sentenced Monday in New London Superior Court on manslaughter and assault convictions in the death of Michael Halpert, who was stationed at the Groton submarine base.
Authorities said Rosario punched Halpert several times at a Preston bar, after Halpert and three other sailors accused him of stealing $15 from the bar's counter. Halpert died of a brain injury.
Rosario's lawyer says his client acted in self-defense. Rosario pleaded to the charges under the Alford doctrine, meaning he didn't agree with all the allegations but conceded he'd probably be convicted.
