NORWALK, Conn. (CT Post) - The Bridgeport woman who police say caused a nightmarish tractor trailer crash Wednesday afternoon that shut down Interstate 95 was on a crack binge for more than a day leading up to the crash, and was even smoking crack when police walked in on her in a Norwalk apartment Wednesday night, police said.
Rachel Wood, 31, of Lindley St., was arraigned at state Superior Court in Norwalk on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving, driving while under suspension and failure to appear for pending criminal cases at the Norwalk and Milford courthouses.
Police had tracked Wood down Wednesday night after they learned she had revved the borrowed car she was driving up to 135 miles per hour before side-swiping another car and setting off a chain reaction that left a New York truck driver in the hospital and all three southbound lanes of the highway closed between exits 15 and 14.
The crash took place at about 4:20 p.m., and all three southbound lanes were closed for more than an hour, causing traffic buildup as far back as Bridgeport on the southbound side and Greenwich on the northbound side. The highway wasn't fully passable until all southbound lanes were opened at 8:30 p.m., state police said.
