Cops: man allegedly assaulted teen he met through iPhone app

AVON, Conn. (WTNH) -- A man has been arrested for sexual assault and the victim is a 15-year-old boy. The two allegedly met using a smart phone app.

25-year-old Andrew Quinn was arrested for second-degree sex assault and risk on injury to a minor.

His alleged victim is a 15-year-old high school boy.

"They had text messages for I believe over a week or so. They came to an agreement for a meeting and then Quinn went to a location and picked up the boy and brought him back to town where the sex assault occurred," Lt. Kelly Walsh of the Avon Police Dept. said.

As the investigation progressed, police figured out that Quinn used a smart phone app called "Grindr". It's where gay men go to meet on one of these smart phone apps.

Before police were worrying about online, watch who your kids are chatting with online but now you have to be careful about the smart phone and the apps.

It's all social media and networking that moves so quickly, even police have trouble keeping up.

"One thing we do when we investigate these crimes and we are proactive about it and we actually have to have middle school and high school kids come in and talk to us and tell us what apps are out there, how are people communicating with each other, how are they sharing pictures. We learn from our juveniles now," Lt. Walsh said.

Police say Quinn brought the boy to his home in Avon and that's where the sexual assault occurred. News 8 rang his door bell but Quinn did not come to the door. Police say there was only one encounter and Quinn did confess to it.

"Quinn did give us a statement as to what had occurred and how he met the individual and what occurred at the house," Lt. Walsh said.

"So he didn't try to hide anything or cover it up," News 8's Bob Wilson asked.

"No he was cooperative with us," Lt. Walsh said.
