EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- An East Hartford man was arrested after barricading himself inside his home after a domestic incident with his live-in girlfriend.

The incident occurred just after midnight, at 96 Higbie Drive.

Upon responding to the home, after receiving a report of a domestic incident, officers attempted to speak with the suspect, 40-year-old Luis Garcia.

Garcia refused to speak with police and mentioned possessing a grenade.

Residences in the area were then evacuated and the East Hartford Tactical Team was brought in.

Negotiators on the scene were able to contact Garcia by calling his cell phone.

When Garcia refused to come out of the home, the tactical team used tear gas in an attempt to make him exit.

Around 5 a.m. Garcia came out of the home and surrendered to police.

He was taken into custody and transported to the hospital to be treated for chest pain.

Garcia was not injured during the incident.

He is charged with disorderly conduct, third-degree assault, first-degree threatening, and first-degree strangulation.

He is being held on a $60,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Manchester Court on August 17th.
