WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) -- A Naugatuck woman was arrested after falsely reporting to police that she had been carjacked at gunpoint.
Just before 1 p.m. on Tuesday Waterbury police responded to the area of 1599 South Main St. to the report of a carjacking at gunpoint.
When officers arrived 35-year-old Cheri Zekiri told them that a man armed with a handgun entered her car and told her to drive away. She said that she was able to escape and the man drove off with her vehicle.
Zekiri also contacted her boyfriend by cellphone and told him that she was being held hostage in Waterbury for a ransom of $500.
Police said Zekiri provided multiple accounts of what happened before eventually admitting that she fabricated the complaint.
The vehicle, a 2001 Ford Focus, is owned by Zekiri's boyfriend and has been located.
Police said the vehicle was not stolen, but at this point it appears that Zekiri sold the vehicle for money to buy drugs and then fabricated the complaint as an excuse as to why she no longer had the vehicle.
According to police, Zekiri has been convicted in the past of larceny, forgery, and prostitution.
