NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (WTNH) -- New Britain Police arrested a couple in connection with two larcenies.
28-year-old Julio Montalvo, of 12 Washington St and his girlfriend, Magaly Mass, 32, of 238 North St, were arrested on October 7 following two burglaries from vehicles at 54 Winter St.
Police said a parishioner of St. Mary Church was leaving mass and saw Montalvo carrying a GPS walking away from a car in the lot that appeared to have been broken into. The member of the church chased after Montalvo on food and was helped by a second member, who picked up the first in a vehicle to follow Montalvo while calling for police assistance.
Police said the church-goers were able to point out Montalvo to the responding officers, but Montalvo fled on food again when officers approached.
Montalvo was taken into custody in Central Park after a short foot chase. Police then found items on Montalvo and Mass that were stolen from an overnight burglary at the Elks Club, located on Washington St.
Two additional residents came forward and gave information that furthered the investigations and resulted in the recovery of stolen property, police said.
Montalvo was charged with burglary, possession of burglary tools, larceny, criminal mischief and interfering with police in three separate cases.
Mass was charged in two cases for larceny and conspiracy to commit larceny.
Montalvo gave a statement as to his involvement in all three of the incidents he was arrested for, as well as incidents at LaQuinta Inn on Columbus Blvd., where he stole items from four vehicles over the past few months.
Police said Montalvo also identified a parking garage on Washington Street, where he stole more items from vehicles and also admitted to involvement in two commercial burglaries that took place on Friday October 5, on Main Street in New Britain and in Meriden.
