STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) - A Darien investment banker has pleaded not guilty to charges that he cut a New York City cab driver of Middle Eastern descent with a pen knife in what prosecutors called a hate crime.

The Advocate of Stamford reports that 47-year-old William Jennings entered the plea Friday in Stamford Superior Court.

Jennings is facing charges of second-degree intimidation based on race or bigotry, second-degree assault and theft of services. Police say he refused to pay the $200 fare for a trip from New York and used racial slurs in the dispute Dec. 22.

An attorney for Jennings has said his client denies the charges and did not intend to cut the driver. Jennings is free on $9,500 bond.

Jennings is on leave from a job with Morgan Stanley.
