Hartford, Conn. (WTNH/AP) - Former Granby Pd Captain David Bourque was sentenced to ten years in federal prison for possession of child pornography.
Fifty-one year-old David Bourque walked into federal court with family members including his two adult daughters. His attorney, Richard Brown, spent hours trying to persuade the judge that a 20 year punishment is too harsh.
When Brown mentioned Bourque's suicide attempt because of the pain and embarrassment he caused his family, Bourque started crying. Brown went on to say Bourque suffered post traumatic stress disorder due to years on the accident reconstruction team.
He also said Brown has been fully cooperative with authorities.
Several times he stated Bourque never sexually assaulted anyone, but did have thousands of images and videos of child pornography. Prosecutors say the videos and images totaled 26,000; the most they've seen in one case in Connecticut.
The biological dad of Bourque's six year-old step-daughter and his wife were also in court. While the judge says the mandatory sentence is five years, the couple says he deserves 20 for the emotional stress he's caused the little girl.
Brown claims a The Department of Children and Families (DCF) investigation revealed Bourque never acted inappropriately around his step-daughter.
Bourque's two adult daughters are set to speak on their dad's behalf.
A prosecutor said Bourque's downloading and sharing of child porn were horrible, and victims in the images are victimized again every time they're watched.
