DANBURY, Conn. (WTNH) -- A Danbury man faces cruelty to animals charges after he shot a dog with a BB gun and a hunting rifle after the dog managed to sneak into his home twice in one night.

Forty-three-year-old Christopher Masi told police he shot the dog, a chow mix, after catching it trying to mate with his own dog early Monday morning.

Police say the dog managed to get over a six-foot tall fence and through a doggy door twice in order to enter the house on Oak Ridge Avenue.

The first time Masi walked in on the canine, he was able to scare the dog away with his BB gun.

When the dog returned four hours later, Masi shot the dog's right shoulder with a Marlin .22-caliber rifle.

Police say the dog lay wounded outside Masi's home for nearly two hours before animal control officers were called in.

The dog had to be put down as a result of its injuries.

Masi faces charges of animal cruelty and weapons charges. He was released on a promise to appear.
