CANTON, Conn. (WTNH) - Police were called to an area in Canton to what was believed to be a possible dog fight, what they found was nothing short of disgusting.

When they arrived to 14A Center around 4p.m. on Wednesday, police say they found 36 animals inside of the apartment, all of which were dehydrated and malnourished.

Most of the animals are dogs.  Vets expect the animals to survive.  They have since been placed in temporary housing area kennels.

Officers describe the apartment as being very dirty, and there is feces on the floor.

"The first thing that comes to mind is hoarding, you can't have 40 animals in a two bedroom apartment that is just not right," says Tom Burns of the Canton Animal Shelter.

Jessica Yazmar, 28, is the only tenant living in that apartment. She was arrested and charged with animal cruelty.

Yazmar did not provide a reason for the condition of the animals or why she had so many in her apartment.
