(WTNH) - Domestic violence cases are on the rise in Connecticut and some legal experts are blaming the economic conditions.

Authorities say the incident all started Saturday night when Christina Lee and her boyfriend had a fight over family issues.

Greater New Haven domestic violence services director Sandra Koorejian says that's the jumping point of almost all domestic violence situations.

Koorejian says especially since the downturn in the economy, calls to their hotline have increased because often the spouse is angry and taking it out on the family.

"The tension can build in the family with the wife, with the other children, because they are there and it can escalate into a phsycial episode," Koorejian said.

Koorejian also tells News Channel 8's Crystal Haynes that it is unusual for a domestic violence situation to elevate to the level it had at Lee's case, but warns violent incidents happen gradually and without intervention anything can be possible.
