Coventry, Conn. (WTNH) -- A Coventry man was arrested after police say his car knocked down a utility pole and then tried to run away from the accident.

Police say Steven Scanlon, 38, was driving south on Route 31 at 1:46 p.m. when his pickup truck collided with a utility pole between Talcott Hill Road and North River Road. The pole fell and brought down numerous wires.

After the collision, Scanlon attempted to drive away from the scene. He was caught a short distance away from the accident as many witnesses called police to report the incident.

Scanlon was charged with evading responsibility and operating under the influence. He was held on a $500 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 23.

The road is expected to be closed for several hours while crews repair the damage. Drivers are asked to use either Route 6 or Route 44 as detours.

As a result of the accident, 144 CL&P customers lost power.
