HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A former executive at a Willimantic nonprofit has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison for embezzling more than $300,000 from the organization that serves people with disabilities.

William Lavimoniere of Plainfield was accused of stealing the money over a three-year period when he served as chief financial officer for Project Genesis, Inc.

Prosecutors say he used internal accounting software to keep terminated employees on the payroll, then transferred the money to his personal accounts.

The 52-year-old Lavimoniere was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Hartford to 33 months in prison. He was also ordered to pay full restitution and back taxes.

He pleaded guilty in May to charges including wire fraud.
