DANBURY, Conn. (AP) — A former Newtown police sergeant has been sentenced to six months in jail for embezzling more than $95,000 from the local police union.
The News-Times of Danbury reports that 34-year-old Domenic Costello of Stratford was sentenced Wednesday in Danbury Superior Court, after having pleaded guilty to larceny. Costello will serve three years of probation after the jail time, and he has repaid the union.
Costello and a co-defendant, 35-year-old Andrew Stinson of Watertown, confessed they "borrowed" more than $180,000 from the police union between 2007 and 2010 to prevent foreclosures on their homes and pay personal bills. Costello was the union's treasurer at the time and Stinson was the president. Both men resigned from the police department last year.
Stinson received the same sentence as Costello last week.
